Briefly, using the 1:25000 OS map helps to make sense of the plot on the website, and is invaluable....

When the Five-Pits Trail is reached the route turns left (north) to reach Wolfie Pond. On the main street turn left (north) until close to the church. Here the route turns left (north) and follows the good path for half a mile, before heading east up the side of the fishing pond....

Walk this routeThere is a major problem on the outskirts of Williamthorpe where a housing site has closed the path. I have created Norbol2 to provide an alternative....

Leaving The Green at North Wingfield, we follow a series of quiet residential streets and surfaced alleyways to reach Station Road, which we cross and go right a short distance then straight on into a car park....

Rather than following the main road left, we take the path that emerges on Sycamore Drive, then follow Sycamore Drive right back to the A632. We follow quiet roads down through the housing estate and down Lea Road, then use paved paths and alleyways to continue past a small park to the old railway, where we turn left on an unsurfaced track. We follow the path off the old railway and down a few steps, then turn right under the railway bridge and take the lane (Dingle Lane) left beyond it that leads out to Calow Lane. We cross the bridge and follow the farm lane and turn left onto Mansfield Road, which has a good pavement on the left/north side. We cross and go left a short distance, then right onto Deincourt Crescent and through an alleyway right onto a good track. Eventually you should find a way onto the muddy field that takes you to the houses on Torrani Way, where we take the path left, then turn right onto Blacks Lane and left onto Draycott Lane to reach the North Wingfield meeting point.at The Green....

I have also walked the quiet road to avoid the mud but that's longer. The road walk to Aswith is fine but misses a wonderful direct footpath through pasture which I used as part of Clagla-2. Branch Road Astwith is quiet and has wide verges plus a distant view across to Bolsover castle, it also has seats at both ends....

Clay Cross has a great bus station with nice clean toilets and buses from everywhere with friendly drivers....

A nice mix of fields (mainly winter wheat and brassicas), country lanes and Herdwick Hall estate. The walk through the Herdwick estate is lovely and many different routes can be taken to exit towards Ault Hucknall church and village (said to be the smallest village in England) finishing across some muddy fields to Glapwell....

I walked this route from Clay Cross in June. It is short and purposeful. There were no particular issues....

The route finding is tricky in places although all the paths exist....

This route exits North Wingfield along the same paths as Clanor2 and hence has the same issue, the path is not easy to locate across the field and through the woodland. Turning north east along the old rail line things improve, then get even better along the Five Pits Trail to Grassmoor Country Park....
Ken
It's direct, good surface pavements and paths and mostly lit but it's noisy with traffic on the shared road section....

A walk of 3 miles to connect two points 1.5 miles apart. Google shows a decent road side pavement along the direct main road....

After the rail crossing the path along side the railway is fenced with overhanging vegetation, this is on the route of the Chesterfield Round which I walked a while back but had to miss this section as it was flooded, the bulrushes along side offer a clue to the boggy nature of the ground....

Ken added Clanor three, a new walk from Clay Cross to North Wingfield
Walk this routeIt runs close to a farm which has a dog that can be loose sometimes, but generally very picturesque and avoids the main roads....

The 'incline' has great views out to the surrounding villages and Chesterfield's famous crooked spire can be seen in the distance. There are a couple of walks through housing estates but these are very quiet....

I used this route to walk from North Wingfield to Chesterfield on 9 May 2021. Unfortunately these sections are separated by an unattractive stretch alongside a busy road. Significant stretch on pavement alongside a busy road. After crossing a main road this meets The Five Pits Trail, another former railway and now a busy walking and cycle trail, with easy walking on an excellent surface. The route then joins the busy Mansfield Road, a monotonous stretch on a good pavement, before turning to cross a bridge over the A617 dual carriageway. This seemed the least used part of the route, but the paths were clear, waymarked, and mostly free of mud. The route eventually drops down to Calow Lane, where there is a very short section of road walking with no verge or refuge...

I walked this route on 9 May 2021 starting from Clay Cross. Necessary to cross a road at a blind corner if walking towards North Wingfield. The route starts in the centre of Clay Cross and follows roadside pavements before veering off past a leisure centre. Here it is necessary to cross the road at a blind corner if walking towards North Wingfield. Eventually the route reaches a narrow footbridge, but to reach the steps up to the next field it was necessary to make a large step over a stream and cross some waterlogged ground The route then crosses two fields to the road, from where it is a short walk to the green in the centre of North Wingfield....

I was actually walking routes Checla One and Chesnor One which between them parallel much of this route. However by also walking the alternative way into Clay Cross used by this route I was able to complete Clanor Two as well. The route was easy to follow and largely free of difficulties and obstructions. There was an easier and immediately obvious alternative along the edge of the adjacent playing field. After a brief section of roadside walking to cross the railway the route turns left again and follows the railway towards Clay Cross On reaching the edge of Clay Cross the route takes quieter roads to reach the town centre...
